Welcome to the Institute for Readers Theatre web site. Founded in 1974 by Dr. William J. Adams, a Stanford University graduate, the Institute is dedicated to the advancement and development of Readers Theatre methodology for teachers, businesses, and professional performers. We sponsor ongoing research in the field, an annual summer Workshop to teach and perfect Readers Theatre techniques, a script service, a text-book, and a center for disseminating ideas in the field.

Administratively, the Institute is headed by Walter R. Stump, Ph.D., Director; Lucille Rioux, M.ED., Associate Director and Manager of Classroom Methodology; and Arlene McCoy, M.ED., Associate Director and Workshop/General Manager. To reach any of us, please go to the Contact Page.

Summer Workshops are held in various international locations including England, France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Switzerland and Greece. Our Workshop may be taken independently or for optional college credit. We are affiliated with the University of Southern Maine, fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, where both graduate and undergraduate credits are available. Our Readers Theatre Script Service contains over 60 titles appropriate for Early Elementary, Advanced Elementary and Middle School, and High School and Adults. While still maintaining the current catalog, we are updating and adding new titles for our next edition. The Institute Book of Readers Theatre is the result of over thirty years of research and hands-on usage of the many techniques that can be used to bring the written word alive.
