WORKSHOP FEATURES

Classes are held Monday-Friday, with afternoons, evenings, and the weekend free. A "hands-on" experience, virtually all work is done in class. Cost includes two weeks in an air conditioned twin room with private bath (private rooms available on a first-come, first-served basis at a supplemental charge) and daily buffet breakfast; also included are Institute instruction fees, materials, and textbook (for first time participants).

CREDIT OPTIONAL

Although not required nor included in the $1,975 Workshop fee, this is a unique opportunity for participants to acquire up to 9 units of graduate or 6 units of undergraduate credit, invaluable for those working for a degree, higher teaching pay, professional advancement, or personal tax advantage.

CREDIT STUDENTS SHOULD EXPECT TO SPEND ADDITIONAL TIME OUTSIDE OF CLASS FOR RESEARCH AND REPORTS.

FACILITIES

The Workshop will be held at the 89 Chestnut Street Residence Hall of the University of Toronto. This university residence has the look and feel of a hotel. Located in downtown Toronto, it's within steps of the shopping and entertainment districts and its direct neighbors are Nathan Phillips Square and the visually-famous City Hall. Every room includes private bathroom, individually controlled air conditioning, and telephone with access to free calls. Internet access is available. ENTERTAINMENT

Toronto has theatres, museums, historical and cultural landmarks, and a variety of recreational spots. The faculty will lead several optional activities, to be announced at the Workshop. Also offered will be weekday pre-breakfast Tai Chi exercises led by Lucy Rioux. Your weekend is free to enjoy Toronto and the surrounding areas. Places such as Niagara Falls, Stratford (Shakespeare Festival), Niagara on the Lake (Shaw Festival) and winery tours are accessible by bus. We will have information available at the Workshop for these optional activities.

Dr. Walter Stump, Director of the Institute for Readers Theatre and U.S.M. representative; Arlene McCoy, Associate Director and Workshop/General Manager; and Lucy Rioux, Associate Director and Manager of Classroom Methodology will be joined by a large and distinguished faculty of RT specialists and guests.

The University of Southern Maine has been the academic sponsor of our International Workshops for the past 16 years.

U.S.M., accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, is an institute of high standing with campuses located in Portland and Gorham.

PROGRAM

(New) License to teach Readers Theatre - This year the Institute for Readers Theatre will issue a document to second year participants certifying that the recipient has completed advanced courses and is now qualified to teach Readers Theatre using official Institute methodology.

Scriptmaking " Direction " Performance " Oral Interpretation " Bilingual RT " Remedial and Gifted Dimensions (as required) " Advanced Class in Oral Interpretation and Scripting for previous participants

PAYMENT

WORKSHOP PACKAGE: $1,975 (US currency) includes housing for two weeks (twin accommodations), buffet breakfast, the Institute Book of Readers Theatre textbook (for first time participants), and Institute instruction fees. A limited number of private rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis for a supplemental fee.

Payment 2: $675 due by April 1, 2009
Payment 3: $675 due by May 1, 2009

Non U.S. applicants must pay in US dollars by postal order, certified check or bank draft.

UNIVERSITY CREDIT

Those who wish optional credit -- for teachers' merit pay qualification, for advanced degrees, or for tax write-off, if eligible -- may elect to enroll in up to 9 graduate credits in Theatre (or Theatre/Speech) and Education (maximum of 6 graduate credits can be taken in Education) from the University of Southern Maine. An additional 3 credits (for a total of 12) may be earned by a pre-arranged one year project to be completed after the Workshop. Undergraduates may enroll for 3 or 6 credits in Theatre. Tuition will be $218 per semester unit for both graduate and undergraduate credit. There is also a Summer Administrative fee of $35 per student (not per unit).

Academic Justification and Course Descriptions are available on request for those who need these materials for their school districts.

INSURANCE

Participants must provide evidence of their own health and accident insurance coverage.

CANCELLATION

Refund requires a request in writing before the Workshop begins. A full refund of payments already made, less a $75 administrative charge, will be given until April 1, 2009. From April 1 to May 28, the cancellation charge will be $100. After May 28, only a partial refund will be considered since substantial non-refundable payments will have been made to various agencies. (If you find that you are unable to attend at the last moment, however, your previous payments may be assigned to a qualified replacement of your selection.) Those in tentative situations should consider travel insurance.

TRAVEL

Because our Workshop is scheduled during the high tourist season, we recommend that you make your travel plans early.
