37th READERS THEATRE SUMMER WORKSHOP LOCATION: The Workshop will be held at University Center (at the intersection of State Street and Congress Parkway) in convenient downtown Chicago. We will have use of the Center's recreation area and fitness center, outdoor terrace, and dining area. We will also have access to kitchen areas and laundry facilities. COST: $1,975 (no increase over 2009), which includes a bed in a Quad Semi-Suite from Sunday evening, July 11 through Saturday morning, July 24, complimentary mid-morning refreshment break on class days, Institute instruction fees, materials, and the Institute Book of Readers Theatre textbook (for first-time participants). Private bedrooms in a Quad 4 bedroom apartment are available for a supplemental charge of $275.00. (See room plan and breakfast options.) ACTIVITIES/ENTERTAINMENT: Classes are held Monday-Friday, leaving your afternoons, evenings, and weekend free to enjoy Chicago and/or the surrounding areas. There are theatres, museums, historical and cultural landmarks, and a variety of recreational spots nearby. The Center is only a few blocks from Lake Michigan. The faculty will lead several optional activities such as a city bus tour and museum visit. Details will be announced at the Workshop. PROGRAM: Many aspects of Readers Theatre will be experienced, including Scriptmaking, Directing, Performance, Methodology, etc., for all educational levels and for those whose primary interest is in creative activity and/or recreation. For those who have attended one of our previous Workshops, there is an Advanced Class to explore and create composite/compiled scripts. Participants taking the Advanced Class will receive a document certifying that the recipient has completed advanced courses and is now qualified to teach Readers Theatre using our long-established and proven-effective Institute methodology. FACULTY: Dr. Walter Stump, Director of the Institute for Readers Theatre and U.S.M. representative; Arlene McCoy, Associate Director and Workshop/General Manager; and Lucy Rioux, Associate Director and Manager of Classroom Methodology. They will be joined by a distinguished faculty of RT specialists and guests. The student-faculty ratio is 5 to1 or better. UNIVERSITY CREDIT: Although not required, the Workshop offers a unique opportunity to acquire graduate credit from the University of Southern Maine (our Workshop academic sponsor for the past 17 years), an institution fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. These credits are especially valuable for those working for higher teaching pay, professional advancement, or personal tax advantage.
